  • Baked Oatmeal

Posted on September 18, 2012 by Jeremy in Baked Goods, Posts by Jeremy.

For Sarah. Good luck kicking the boxed cereal habit. 🙂 A coworker left copies of this in the kitchenette at work. It’s from the book Super Natural Every Day by Heidi Swanson.   2 cups rolled oats 1/2 cup walnut pieces, toasted and chopped 1/3 cup natural cane sugar or maple syrup, plus more for […]

  • Vegetable curry? In Anamosa?

Posted on July 27, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

7/29: It’s true, it’s true! They were selling it at a stand at the expo in Anamosa, along with gyros. The gyro meat was pre-sliced, so I was not interested–it needs to be shaved off a giant rotating drum of meat if it’s going to taste any good! Call me spoiled; I live above one […]

  • Mr. Pork Chop

Posted on July 27, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

The one and only. Iowa chops, spritzed with butter, locked into a rotating grill, cooked over burning corn husks, and served plain from a cooler, in a paper towel.

  • Dang Bros!

Posted on July 26, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

I front-loaded all of my meals today–more Breakfast Delights (love them!), and for an early lunch, Dang Bros. Pizza. Their pizzas are made-to-order, and are baked in an oven built into the back of an old fire truck. It was a little pricy, but OMG. The pizza was larger than the plate. I was concerned […]

  • Kolaches in Clutier

Posted on July 26, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

It’s been a beautiful morning so far. 🙂 So, funny story: I bought this kolache from a group raising money for the Clutier Public Library. One of the other guys from my group rolled through the town a little later. After purchasing and consuming a kolache like the one above, he walked past a stand […]

  • It’s BAAAACONNNN

Posted on July 25, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

Seriously: thick-cut bacon on a stick, with chocolate and sprinkles, in Jewell. Also, I had something called a fruity screw in Kamrar–basically a giant screwdriver with a fruit kabob stuck in it. I normally avoid alcohol when I’m riding, but this drink could have been named after me, so I felt obliged! It’s making the […]

  • Beekman’s!

Posted on July 24, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

Ice cream at 9am? Yes, please! Beekman’s is homemade, mixed by these old motors. They have a distinctive sound that you can hear from a good way up the road. RAGBRAI cyclists have been trained to drool upon hearing this sound, not unlike Pavlov’s dogs did for a bell. 🙂 Update, 7/29: Now with video!

  • Kelly’s Berry Best Pie

Posted on July 24, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

7/29: One of the best parts of RAGBRAI is all of the homemade pie. I’m thinking that I had at least four or five slices during the week. This slice of gooseberry with caramel and whipped cream from Kelly’s Berry Best Pie (on Facebook) was among the best. (Seriously, though, is there such a thing […]

  • Too hot

Posted on July 24, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

Sorry for not posting anything today–it’s an 81-mile route, we fought a head wind from Lohrville to Dayton, and there is record-setting heat. I just had an amazing smoothie made from banana and strawberry with pineapple juice. Oh oh, and I stopped to try the Maleys’ pulled pork earlier, and kicked myself for not buying […]

  • Breakfast Delights

Posted on July 23, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

Up early and already to Aurelia. Breakfast Delights has long been a favorite of mine. Farmer’s eggs (w/sausage, potatoes and diced peppers & onion), and cinnamon walnut French toast sticks. 7/29: I caught up with the woman who runs the Breakfast Delights stand a few mornings later, curious about some of the logistics of a […]

  • Peddling to pedalers

Posted on July 22, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy.

A network signal! And none too soon. I got on the road early to beat the heat–my plan for the whole week, actually–and I’m in the tiny town of Marcus right now, not quite 20 miles from Cherokee, our first overnight town. Some of the food vendors follow us all week. One standout is Garden […]

  • Stroopwafel in Orange City

Posted on July 22, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy, Uncategorized.

(7/29: I didn’t get this post onto the website from the road. Sorry for the chronological weirdness.) Orange City, IA has an annual tulip festival in May. They wheeled out their vendors’ buildings and decorations for RAGBRAI. As the first town on the first morning, they really started things off right. Their town is super […]

  • Of cold soup and hot cycling

Posted on July 11, 2012 by Jeremy in Posts by Jeremy, Uncategorized.

Hey, just trying out this neato WordPress for Android app. If it works, I will be posting from the road as I ride in RAGBRAI in a couple of weeks! The picture above is my first attempt at the gazpacho recipe Sarah posted last week. Me gusta! So, about RAGBRAI: some riders make it their […]
