• Twistree Bread

    • 2 ¾ – 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
    • 1 envelope active dry yeast
    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • ¼ cup shortening
    • ¼ cup sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 2 tbsp margarine or butter, softened
    Directions:Combine 1 ½ cups flour, yeast, and ¼ tsp baking soda. Heat buttermilk, shortening, sugar, and 1 tbsp salt till warm, stirring to melt shortening. Add to dry ingredients; add egg. Beat at low speed ½ minute scraping constantly. Beat 3 minutes at high speed. Stir in enough remaining flour to make moderately stiff. Turn onto floured board; knead 5 minutes. Cover; let rest 10 minutes. Halve dough. Roll one half to 14×6-inch rectangle. Spread with 1 tbsp butter or margarine; sprinkle with 1 tbsp red sugar crystals. Fold in half to make narrow rectangle. Cut into fourteen 1-inch strips. Twist each one; arrange on greased baking sheet in tree shape. Repeat with remaining dough, butter, and 1 tbsp green sugar crystals. Let rise one hour. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes; cool. Frost with confectioners’ icing.
